The Storks of Holzen – it sounds like some sort of movie thriller doesn’t it? Or maybe a new wave band from the early 80’s.
Not so. Holzen is a very small town, in the municipality of Kandern.
Holzen has storks. Lots of storks.
They were quite common in the area in mediaeval and early modern times. Due to their increased scarcity over the centuries, a stork refuge was built in 1979 in hopes of re-establishing the large birds in the area.
It seems to have worked, as many of steeples around the town are inhabited with the enormous nests of these fabulous birds.
