We booked the “Deluxe River View King” room at The Riverview Hotel in Shanghai. It took a bit of searching to find, as it was a little further from The Bund than we were expecting. The building is also behind another building on South Zhongshan Road, so when we arrived it looked like we’d booked ourselves a suite in an office block.
The hotel itself was lovely, and the staff were exceptionally friendly. There were some spectacular views to be had – I just wish I had a better camera.
On checking out the staff raced up to our room and noticed that apparently a face washer was missing, and so the cost (around $2) was added to the bill. For some reason I found that utterly hilarious. The room had cost close to $500 for 4 nights, so we certainly weren’t slumming it.
The hotel is also around 2km from The Bund, with not much in between save for some car parks and construction sites. Shanghai seems to expand by metres daily, so this hotel may well be in the middle of a thriving metropolis within a few months. It just isn’t now.
