Gift ideas for a one year old’s parents

This is a bit of a followup from the Gift ideas for a one-year-old article I published a week or so ago.

I got to thinking after reading back through it, and thought to myself “what would I actually want, as the parent of my one-year-old?”

The answer I came up with in a nanosecond was TIME.

I gave that some more thought, and figured that one can actually give time away.

The first year of a child’s life can be some of the most difficult, challenging, and life-affirming of their parents life.

Monumental doesn’t even begin to describe it.

If you think the little one you’re gifting has enough toys and thrills, then I’d suggest giving a gift to the parents is a fabulous idea. Just for making it through.

So, without further ado, here are some more suggestions on gift ideas for a one-year-old AND their parents. This small list would do for any age, as it really has very little to do with the kids at all!

Babysitting

kidsIf I could do my time again, I’d forgo all the pain of trying to buy any of my friends or relatives kids a bloody thing.

I’d just rock up at the party and present the parents with a voucher that entitled them to a total of 5 hours babysitting time. It would be able to be used in any increments.

I would be the hero of the day.

You could be that hero.

Give up your time and their parents will love you forever.

Alcohol

Vouchers

gift-voucher001Because even with this list you’ll still probably get the wrong thing. You could go with a voucher from a baby shop, like Baobab Clothing or Lime Tree Kids.

Do NOT get a movie voucher. It will never be used and will be stuck to the fridge for years as a constant reminder of the life that no longer is.

Music

record-playerEvery kid loves music. If they don’t – just leave the party – you don’t need that kind of person in your life.

There’s a huge amount of kids music out there, but you can also think out of the box. My son’s favourite music to sleep to are artists like Decoder Ring, Explosions In The Sky, Tycho and Aphex Twin. These are all albums I listened to before becoming a parent.

Parenthood doesn’t have to mean a life of servitude to The Wiggles.

You can purchase all the music you want, and more from www.sanity.com.au.

Donations or Socially Conscious Gift

moneyChances are if you’re reading this, you’ve got an internet connection and a phone or computer. Chances are your friends do too, and don’t really need any of the stuff listed on this page.

An original gift could be giving to someone who needs it more, like Doctors Without Borders, or The Stroke Foundation.

Or another idea could be buying something from a socially aware store like Oxfam.
